Huawei Considers 4,000MWh Battery Storage Project in Egypt
Chinese technology group Huawei is considering battery energy storage facilities with a combined capacity of 4,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) in Egypt. The proposed project would include local production of battery energy storage systems and several utility-scale storage facilities connected to the national power grid.
The proposal was discussed on 23 August 2026 during a meeting between Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and Benjamin Houwei, CEO of Huawei’s Egyptian subsidiary. The plans include manufacturing battery energy storage systems locally and installing standalone storage facilities at selected locations across Egypt.
Huawei Targets Grid-Scale Energy Storage
Battery energy storage systems can store electricity and release it when demand increases, helping electricity networks manage changes in power supply. Egypt is looking to expand storage capacity as it adds more solar and wind generation to its electricity system. Esmat said BESS projects are important for grid stability, flexibility and electricity supply quality. He also highlighted the need to connect storage systems with existing solar and wind facilities to increase the use of renewable electricity.
Egypt Expands Renewable Energy Capacity
Egypt aims to increase renewable energy to 45% of its electricity mix by 2028. The country had more than 25,000 MW of renewable energy capacity in operation or under development in 2025.
The proposed Huawei project could support the integration of additional solar and wind power while giving the national grid greater flexibility during periods of high demand. Local BESS manufacturing would also add a domestic production component to Egypt’s energy storage plans. Egypt is also pursuing a wider role in regional clean-energy markets, including plans to export low-carbon electricity and green hydrogen to Europe through future Euro-Mediterranean energy corridors.
