WhatsApp will replace phone numbers with usernames In group chats

WhatsApp will soon be releasing a new upgrade for group members that will replace phone numbers with usernames in the chat list. Users will now see push names instead of phone numbers if they receive a message from an unknown contact in a WhatsApp group after the new feature update. WhatsApp began releasing a new feature in December of last year that replaced phone numbers with push names within the message bubble of group conversations.

The most recent enhancement improved users’ ability to detect messages from unfamiliar contacts in the group chat window. According to WAbetainfp, WhatsApp is now introducing this capability to its chat list so that users may see who sent them messages in the group conversation.

The new upgrade isn’t very significant, but it will make it easier for all receivers to identify the unknown contact, even if they haven’t saved the number to their contact list. The functionality may also substitute phone numbers with usernames in various portions of the programme, such as the list of group participants. Especially in large groups when it is hard to save each and every group member’s contact information.

In instance, the update will display the username of only group members in the preview of messages inside the chat list, rather than unsaved contacts’ personal conversations. Currently, the new update for the chat list is rolling out for WhatsApp beta for Android users with WhatsApp’s latest version, 2.23.5.12 and for iOS beta with WhatsApp beta update for iOS 23.5.0.73. After testing, the feature will be available to everyone in future app updates.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has begun testing a new feature for groups that will offer group administrators more power. WhatsApp has launched a new approval option for group chat admins, which is now available with the WhatsApp beta version for iOS and Android. This feature allows group administrators to manage who may join the group using the group invite link. When activated in settings, whenever someone tries to join the group via the chat link, all members will get a chat notification indicating that the new entrant is awaiting admin clearance to join the group. The group admins will be able to pick who may join and govern the group more effectively this way.
