South African drivers can breathe a sigh of relief as petrol and diesel prices are set to decrease from Wednesday January 3, 2024, according to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).

Both 93 and 95 octane petrol will see a reduction of 62c/l and 76c per litre. The price of diesel (0.05% sulfur) will drop by R1.18 per litre, and diesel with 0.005% sulfur will decrease by R1.26 per litre.

Additionally, illuminating paraffin will see a decrease in price per litre, and the cost of LPGas will reduce by 93 cents per kilogram. DMRE spokesperson Robert Maake cited various international and local factors contributing to the decline in petrol and diesel prices.

The Automobile Association (AA) says while 2024 is starting on a positive note for consumers, it’s still too early to determine if the trend to lower prices will continue, given current geopolitical developments which have an effect on international oil prices.

“For this reason, a sustainable solution to mitigating rising fuel costs is still necessary and until that solution is found, citizens will be at the mercy of fuel price hikes. We again call on government to urgently initiate a transparent review of the fuel pricing structure to seek this solution,” it says.
