Rare 170-carat pink diamond found in Angola, the largest in over 300 years

A rare diamond has been discovered in the African continent, Angola, and it is found after 300 years as it becomes the most unique stone.

The 170-carat rare pink diamond weighs 34 grams and it is thought to be the largest discovered in the last 300 years as per the press release by the mining company.

Titled the Lulo Rose, the name also refers to the Angolan mine where it was found and according to an Australian company, Lucapa Diamond Company, the stone is the fifth largest found in the Southern Africa-based mine.

Meanwhile, the BBC has it that the find is the biggest since the 185-carat Daria-i-Noor, which was cut from a larger stone and it is now among the Iranian national jewels.

Furthermore, it is mentioned that the Lulo Rose is a type 2a diamond, meaning it has few or no impurities.

“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage,” said Diamantino Azevedo, Minister of Mineral Resources in Angola.

As per a media statement on the mining company’s social media post, similar diamonds have been sold for tens of millions of dollars in the recent past, with one – known as Pink Star – selling at a Hong Kong auction for $71.2m (£59m) in 2017.

However, it is highly impossible to predict the price of the Lulo Rose once it is cut and that is according to an independent jewellery expert.

“Pink diamonds are extremely rare – but the same physical attributes that make the stones scarce also make them very tough, and not easy to work into shapes,” said Joanna Hardy.

“The stone is unlikely to end up on public view – or even brought to auction – as retailers have clients waiting to snap up such a rare find.”

The largest known pink diamond by far is known as the Daria-i-Noor which was discovered in India and specialists believe it was cut from an even larger stone.

Taking a glance at some history and background of such rare finds, the biggest rough stone of any colour ever recorded was dug at the Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa back in 1905.

The diamond weighed 3,107 carats – more than half a kilogram – it was cut into 105 different stones.
