Parmigiani Fleurier, an obscure Swiss watchmaker, has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity, rivalling renowned brands such as Girard-Perregaux, Audemars Piguet, and Patek Philippe. Since Guido Terreni took over as CEO in early 2021, the brand has undergone a transformation, focusing on a single watch line—the highly sought-after Tonda PF. Terreni, former Bulgari president of horology, redesigned and relaunched the Tonda within six months of his appointment. Wait lists for the integrated-bracelet sports watch now exceed a year, with prices ranging from around 22,000 francs ($24,655) for a basic steel model to around 163,000 francs ($24,655) for a platinum-cased flying tourbillon.

Terreni attributes the brand’s success to its independence, which allows him to make quick decisions while remaining true to his vision. Parmigiani Fleurier is owned by the Sandoz family, who founded the company that later evolved into Novartis SA, a prominent pharmaceutical manufacturer. The revamped Tonda collection now accounts for approximately 98% of the brand’s sales, according to Terreni, though specific figures were not disclosed. According to Terreni’s statement, the brand currently produces “a few thousand” watches per year.

According to Jean-Philippe Bertschy, an analyst at Vontobel, Parmigiani’s annual watch production is around 3,000 pieces, generating sales of around 100 million francs. Bertschy praises Terreni’s track record, strong industry relationships, and ambitious plans for the brand, stating that Parmigiani possesses all of the elements required for a successful story, particularly given its established credibility in watchmaking.

Michel Parmigiani, a renowned Swiss watchmaker known for his skill in restoring valuable antique timepieces, founded Parmigiani Fleurier twenty-five years ago. Parmigiani founded his eponymous brand in 1996, backed by the Sandoz family foundation, which not only produced watches but also spawned a network of supply and component manufacturers, including Vaucher Manufacture, known for producing movements for Parmigiani Fleurier and other brands.

According to Roger Ruegger, editor-in-chief of WatchTime, Parmigiani Fleurier has always had more substance than many of its competitors. Under Terreni’s direction, however, the brand has become more consistent and disciplined in emphasising its aesthetic and functional codes, making it more recognisable and desirable.

At the 2022 edition of Watches and Wonders, Parmigiani Fleurier piqued the interest of the watch industry. The Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante, priced at 27,000 francs and featuring a novel approach to tracking a second-time zone, received praise from both watch enthusiasts and the press.

Parmigiani debuted the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante at this year’s fair, a watch with a complication in the movement and a minute timer hand on the dial. This novel approach differs from the traditional method of timing activities such as pasta cooking by using a graduated timer on a rotating watch bezel.

Since taking over as CEO, Terreni has reduced the number of retailers selling the brand by 65%, which has helped Parmigiani Fleurier distinguish itself in the thriving Swiss luxury watch market. Terreni contends that larger competitors produce different versions of similarly styled timepieces, whereas Parmigiani offers a unique and prestigious proposition, appealing to a knowledgeable audience seeking non-mainstream options.
