Huawei Unveils 'Internet of Energy' Solutions to Transform the Power Industry

Huawei South Africa has recently launched a suite of innovative solutions to help companies in the electric power industry navigate the digital transformation journey. These solutions, which were announced at the Enlit Africa Conference 2023 in Cape Town, are designed to assist organisations in navigating various power grid scenarios and optimising their operations.
In the midst of South Africa’s ongoing struggle with increasing power outages, Huawei has been actively introducing renewable energy solutions and has seen a surge in the country’s renewable energy business. Although already available globally, the newly launched product portfolio aims to ensure the secure, stable, and cost-effective operation of power systems’ core infrastructure. According to Huawei, it also optimises the management and monitoring of power transmission lines.
The Huawei Energy Spark Architecture, which the company claims enables electric power companies to achieve secure, efficient, green, and sustainable development through innovative approaches, serves as the foundation for these solutions. Edwin Diender, Huawei’s CIO of global energy, emphasised that power industry firms can improve their energy transition and business performance while also contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future by leveraging technological advancements and embracing sustainability.
Three critical solutions are included in the portfolio: intelligent transmission line inspection, a power distribution IoT solution, and an electric wireless campus network. These solutions are part of Huawei’s comprehensive electric power industry system, which integrates emerging ICT and digital power platforms with industry best practises.
Diender emphasised the three-step approach underlying these solutions: converting a traditional grid to a smart grid, incorporating electricity metres into an advanced metre infrastructure, and leveraging intelligent connectivity to create an “internet of energy.” The “Internet of Energy” ensures immediate energy availability, similar to how a smartphone can access information.
Huawei also released a white paper at the Enlit Africa Conference on electric power communication all-optical network architecture and technologies. This white paper serves as a guide to facilitating the digital transformation of the electric power industry, providing insights on how to build an intelligent optical foundation for power communication networks based on an all-optical architecture. Its goal is to assist the industry in overcoming digital challenges, meeting technical requirements for digital transformation, and accelerating digital solution adoption.
Huawei’s latest offerings aim to provide the electric power industry with advanced technology and innovative solutions that will allow for a smooth transition to a more sustainable and efficient future.
