Google has introduced new advertising features aimed at helping Nigerian businesses understand how customers interact with their Search ads and manage campaigns using simpler instructions.

The features are part of AI Max for Search, Google’s advertising system that uses AI to handle parts of Search campaign targeting and ad creation. Google announced the updates in September as Nigerian businesses prepare for Black Friday and the December shopping period.

Google Brings Search Data Into One Report

One of the new features will give advertisers a single view of what happens when someone interacts with a Search ad.

The report will show the search that triggered the advertisement, the creative shown to the customer and the webpage they reached after clicking the ad.

Previously, advertisers had to look through different sections of their Google Ads accounts to connect this information. Bringing the details together should make it easier for businesses to examine which searches are driving traffic and where those customers are being sent.

The reporting feature was announced at DMEXCO 2026 in Cologne and is expected to roll out globally, including Nigeria, later this year.

For Nigerian businesses running several Search campaigns, the report could help when reviewing which products, services or offers are attracting customers and whether the landing pages match what those customers were looking for.

Advertisers Can Give AI Direct Instructions

Google is also expanding AI Brief, a Gemini-powered tool that allows businesses to provide campaign instructions in ordinary language. Advertisers can tell the system what they want their campaigns to focus on and what they want their advertisements to avoid.

A retailer could instruct AI Max to prioritise searches for school uniforms, for example, while asking it to highlight free delivery in Lagos for first-time customers. Businesses can also tell the system not to include certain information in their ads.

Before a campaign runs, AI Brief can show sample advertisements and searches based on the instructions. Advertisers can then make changes before the campaign goes live. Google is expanding the closed beta of AI Brief to seven additional languages: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.

Search Ads Are Becoming More Detailed

Google is also responding to changes in the way people search. The company says searches through its AI Mode are three times longer than traditional searches, while one in six searches uses voice or an image. Longer searches give advertisers more information about what a customer actually wants.

Someone looking for a generator, for example, might search for a small generator that can run a freezer and two fans while using less fuel instead of simply typing “generator”.

AI Max is designed to work with these longer queries and identify products or services that are relevant to the search.

Google says about 500,000 advertisers globally adopted AI Max during its first year. It has also reported that advertisers using the system recorded 27% more conversions at a similar cost. Those figures are based on global results and do not represent performance specifically among Nigerian advertisers.

Ads Around Google's AI Overviews

Google is also allowing advertisements to appear above and below AI Overviews in more than 200 countries, including Nigeria. AI Overviews provide generated answers for some Search queries before users move through the traditional results. Google says the feature now reaches about two billion people globally. this creates another location where their products and services can appear when customers use Search.

The timing is important for Nigerian retailers and other businesses preparing for the end-of-year sales period. Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026, followed by the Christmas shopping season.

Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for East and West Africa, has encouraged Nigerian businesses to prepare their peak-season campaigns early.

For businesses already using Google Ads, the new tools provide more information about what happens between a customer's search and their visit to a website. AI Brief also gives advertisers another way to tell Google's advertising system how they want their campaigns and messaging handled.

The reporting feature will arrive in Nigeria later this year, while the AI Brief expansion and advertising around AI Overviews form part of Google's wider advertising rollout.
