Google plans to add artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to its existing offering, which it is currently developing. This comes after competitors such as new Microsoft’s Bing have taken over.
Reports shared by New York Times, Samsung, an electronic giant company was considering replacing Google with Microsoft’s Bing as the main search engine on its devices.
According to internal messages reviewed by The News York Times, Google’s reaction to the threat made by Samsung was “panic.” An estimated $3 billion in annual revenue was at stake with Samsung contract.
California-based company, The Mountain View and Google they are in the middle of testing the new features under the name ‘Magi,’ according to The Times. The initial plans is to release the features to as many as one million people in the US with an increase to 30 million by the end of the year. Currently, more than 160 people are working on the search engine.
Lara Levin, a Google spokeswoman, said in a statement that “not every brainstorm deck or product idea leads to a launch, but as we’ve said before, we’re excited about bringing new A.I.-powered features to search, and will share more details soon.”
The features have the potential to write software code, AI image generation, foreign language learning skills and also display ads.
Google invited some of its employers to test Magi’s features last week. Google is expected to release the tool to the public next month and will be adding more features as time goes on, according to the documents.
Former Google vice president of sales and service, Jim Lecinski, said the company has been driven into action and has to convince users that the feature is “powerful, competent and contemporary.”
“If we are the leading search engine and this is a new attribute, a new feature, a new characteristic of search engines, we want to make sure that we’re in this race as well,” Mr Lecinski, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University, said in an interview.
