Zimbabwe is gearing up for the introduction of new banknotes and coins scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, as banks nationwide have received the local currency from the central bank for distribution.

The upcoming currency rollout features the highest denomination of the new currency, dubbed Zimbabwe Gold or ZiG, with the 200 ZiG note, valued at approximately $15.

In adherence to directives from authorities, individuals will be authorized to withdraw up to ZiG 3,000 per week, while companies can access up to ZiG 30,000. However, reports from local media indicate that certain institutions such as parliament, courts, and international organizations will not be subject to cash withdrawal limits.

This move towards a new currency launch is a response to Zimbabwe’s ongoing struggle with surging inflation, representing the latest attempt to stabilize the economy.

Nevertheless, early signs suggest potential hurdles for the new currency. A digital iteration has already experienced a 25% depreciation against the US dollar on the black market.

This marks the third currency introduced in Zimbabwe over the past decade. The ZiG is purportedly backed by gold and foreign currency reserves, a measure aimed at preserving its value, as stated by the central bank.
