A coalition named the AI Alliance, which involves Meta Platforms, IBM, and over 40 other entities, is dedicated to fostering open-source AI initiatives. 

Their focus spans responsible AI development, safety tools, and expanding open-source AI models. The main goal is to collaborate on hardware, engage with academic researchers, and establish governance structures. Meta’s president, Nick Clegg, emphasizes the benefits of open development for wider accessibility and safety. Notably absent from the coalition is OpenAI, amid recent controversies concerning transparency in AI development.

“We believe it’s better when AI is developed openly — more people can access the benefits, build innovative products and work on safety,” Nick Clegg said in the statement.
